A former health club owner, Stephen P. Smith opened the first Planet Beach tanning salon in New Orleans in 1995. His idea was to apply many of the principles of the health club industry, mainly that of selling memberships, to the tanning business.
Each location has a selection of tanning beds and sells Planet Beach's line of tanning lotions as well as bathing suits, goggles, and other related items.
